Erlenbusch was one of several labor camps that were part of the Gross-Rosen camp complex. Erlenbusch itself was constructed between April and June 1944 in Germany as one of twelve heavy-labor camps for men. These camps held around 13,000 people, mostly Hungarian Jews, who had been evacuated from Auschwitz and other camps to be exploited for labor. In January 1945, all surviving Erlenbusch inmates were sent on death marches to the German interior. Sol, his father, and his uncle, who were imprisoned at Erlenbusch from May 1944, were among them.
